Anger is a human feeling that may be triggered by a person, event or memory of an infuriating event in the past. Anger results in aggressiveness; at least this is the primary response of people. However, if we were to give way to each wave of aggressiveness that comes along, this world would be a very uneasy place. So, in this matter the anger management techniques might work wonders.
Anger can be defeated and you can give it another constructive direction.
Anger management is based on the idea that you cannot change anything about the people or situations that make you angry, because these keep on appearing, but you can be in charge of your negative reactions. This does not mean closing in your anger and get frustrated, because this may lead to psychological illnesses. Instead you can start practicing the following anger management techniques.
1. First of all, try to relax. Take a deep breath and think about something that pleases you: your pet, your best friend, your lover, a trip to an exotic location and so on. So, whenever somebody or something infuriates you, just relax and do not start to scream or express your anger.
2. Next, when you are very angry and would like to curse or scream, try to count to 10 and replace all these curses or primary thoughts with something more rational. Try not to dramatize. Instead of saying ‘That’s terrible, nothing can be done’ etc., you can say ‘That makes me very angry, but I try to understand because there is nothing I can do about it.’ You can get over anger with good reason.
3. Try to solve the problem. Sometimes this is a valid anger management technique. See what the possible solutions are and communicate with people around you. When you are angry, do not say the very things that come to mind take a deep breath and try to communicate something logical to those you are having the argument with. If you say what you think at first, you might end up hurting people and that is not a problem solving act.
4. Also, try to listen. What others say is also important and relevant to the present situation.
5. Use your sense of humor, even if you make a stupid joke that might release the tension. This is a very rewarding anger management technique, as it might turn the situation upside down and you might even get a good laugh which is a very positive action.
So, remember, you cannot change the way the world works, but you can change the way you react. Use the above mentioned anger management techniques, and in case these do not work at all, find a therapist who can help you.
