As an owner of a dog you are experiencing a lot of great things that your pet brings you, but there are some things that are also not really pleasant: dogs in heat. Find out how to handle these periods the right way.
Dogs in heat- and your pet is not so friendly and cute anymore. When dogs are in heat, they behave in a very strange manner, behavior which is different for a male dog and a female dog. So, what should you expect from dogs in heat? During this heat- the female dogs are fertile and can get pregnant, so they send out some messages to the male dogs. These messages are actually some pheromones- some hormones which the dogs can sense from a far distance.
When the period of dogs in heat comes, the dog females are actually menstruating. This dog menstruation is a light bleeding, which will last for about 21 days on average. This period of dogs in heat may last for less – two weeks or even more – four weeks, but no longer. As mentioned earlier, all the male dogs will be attracted to the female dogs in heat. The female dog will easily get pregnant during this heat period, but some female dogs will reject any male and be very aggressive during this time. However, if you have thought of breeding pups, this is the time to act, as only dogs in heat may get pregnant.
The female dogs will start getting in heat after the age of six months but this may vary from dog to dog. The heat period will be about twice a year on average, but they may come even more rarely. So, this is the time when your dog may get pregnant. Some dog owners get their dogs in heat diapers to avoid the mess, but as said earlier, the bleeding is light.
The only actual problem is that the dogs in heat will attract male dogs and they will behave like mad. Otherwise, if you think you can control your dog in heat, you can take it out for walks and follow the regular daily program. When going out with your dog in heat, it is strongly advisable that you walk them on leash; otherwise all the male dogs will be willing to hump your dog.
All in all, this is about what you have to know about dogs in heat. Just consider the heat as part of your dogs’ particularities and learn to live with them.
